Myths and Facts About Liposuction

Do you often gain weight around the face and neck, and no diet seems to make it go away? Excess facial weight can add years to your appearance and is not something you can always control with diet alone. Genetics and hormones also influence how much fat you store and where it accumulates.
If you’ve ever wondered what you might look like with a more chiseled jawline, read on as our expert, Dr. Oren Friedman, shares the most common myths and facts to know before scheduling a liposuction consultation.
Fact: Liposuction is for everyone, of any age, as long as they are adults
As long as you're in overall good health and don’t have medical conditions that could cause complications, you can undergo liposuction at any age — as long as you are an adult. The procedure is performed with light sedation and a topical anesthetic, so there’s no need to worry about general anesthesia.
Myth: The fat will come back
Once fat cells are removed through liposuction, they are gone for good. Unlike other types of cells in the body, fat cells do not regenerate in the treated area. However, it's important to maintain a stable weight, as significant weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells in untreated areas to enlarge, changing your look.
Fact: Liposuction can target areas that diet and exercise can’t
Unfortunately, for many people diet and exercise alone don’t result in the sculpted curves or contours they hope for. Genetics and hormones play a big role in body fat distribution. Liposuction is often the only effective solution for stubborn fat deposits, especially around the face.
Myth: Liposuction is a weight loss tool
Liposuction is excellent for reducing fat in specific areas, but if you want to lose overall body fat, you still need to maintain a caloric deficit through diet and exercise.
Fact: Liposuction comes with minimal scarring
Despite being a surgical procedure, liposuction involves very small, strategically placed incisions. For facial liposuction, Dr. Friedman places incisions behind the ears and beneath the chin, where scars remain discreet.

Though it’s a surgical intervention, the incisions are tiny and easy to conceal. Recovery is typically smooth and lasts about a week, during which rest and over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief are recommended.
