Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing technique used by facial plastic surgeons since 1962 which peels away the top layers of skin. This procedure allows for the emergence of a new, younger-looking skin.
A chemical peel can be done at mild, medium or deep strength.
Mild peels can treat minor wrinkles and recurring acne and are usually done using glycolic acid. Salicylic acid can be used to improve skin tone and texture, but it is not as effective in treating deep wrinkles.
Medium-level peels are done using trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA is available in different strengths, which allows the surgeon more or less penetration depending on how deep are the wrinkles being treated. Medium-depth peels can improve skin discoloration, such as age spots, and can eliminate fine wrinkles and improve skin tone and texture.
Deep level peels use phenol to treat significant lines, wrinkles, and blemishes. This is a strong, long-lasting treatment, but it is only suitable for people who have very pale complexions. Phenol peels result in a new top layer of skin that will be, for most people, an unnaturally white tone that is permanent and can not be adequately covered by make-up.
The results of a chemical peel can last for several years or even indefinitely, depending on the acid solution used.
You are given instructions about how to care for your face using ointments, moisturizing creams and gentle facial cleansers. The cleansers remove the superficial layer of old skin. After about 7 to 14 days, you will notice a new, pink-colored skin that has replaced the old layer. If you have a deep-level peel, you are given prescriptions for pain medications for discomfort.
Risks may include:
- Infection.
- Changes in the color of your skin (pigmentation), usually lost pigmentation, particularly for more darkly complected people.
