Considering Otoplasty? Here's What You Need to Know

Do you still check your ears in the mirror? Or perhaps you choose hairstyles to accommodate their appearance?
Otoplasty, often referred to as ear pinning surgery, is a cosmetic procedure performed by Oren Friedman, MD, to reshape, reposition, or reduce the size of the ears. This surgery is tailored to meet each patient’s unique aesthetic goals, whether it’s creating better balance with facial features or addressing ears that protrude more than desired. In addition to cosmetic concerns, otoplasty can also help restore the natural appearance of the ears following an injury or trauma.
Most importantly, this surgical procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can have someone drive you home after the surgery and be able to sleep in your own bed.
If you’ve ever considered otoplasty, read on as Dr. Friedman shares everything you need to know about the procedure.
What happens during your otoplasty consult
It all starts with a consult, in which you’ll explain what you’d like to change about the appearance of your ears.
During this time, Dr. Friedman will also review your medical history and perform a physical examination to ensure you can tolerate the surgery well.
Before the surgery, you’ll also be asked to stop taking any medications or supplements that could thin out your blood, such as aspirin or omega-3, and to stop smoking cigarettes, as smoking delays healing.
What does the surgical procedure entail
The procedure typically takes between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of the changes you'd like to make.
During surgery, Dr. Friedman creates a few small incisions, usually behind the ears or tucked within their natural folds, so any scarring remains discreet and barely visible. While some scarring is inevitable, most patients find it minimal and well-hidden once healing is complete
After surgery, you’ll wear a bandage for a few days to support healing. Most patients can return to work or school within a week, although strenuous activities should be avoided for a couple of weeks. Dr. Friedman will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your ears and what to expect during each stage of recovery.
Find out if you’re a good candidate for an otoplasty
If you or a loved one is considering it, know that most people are good candidates for the surgery after their ears are fully grown. Most people have their ears fully grown past the age of 5. Adults, teenagers, and children alike can be good candidates as long as their ears are fully developed.
