Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be board-certified?

Surgeons that are board certified are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). A facial plastic surgeon is usually board certified in otolaryngology - surgery of the head and neck. To become board certified, a physician must pass a series of rigorous oral and written tests about medical procedures and practices. Many AAFPRS surgeons specialize further by undertaking an additional year's fellowship in facial plastic surgery to become certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).

What is the Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery?

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) represents board-certified facial plastic surgeons who have undergone extensive training to perform plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, head, and neck. AAFPRS members perform most of the nasal plastic surgeries in the nation. They believe in sharing their knowledge, expertise, and services to other physicians and consumers.

Why choose a Facial Plastic Surgeon?

A Facial Plastic Surgeon is board certified and has undergone extensive training to perform surgery of the face, head and neck.  The surgeon completes a residency of at least five years after medical school focusing on Plastic Surgery or Otorhinolaryngology.  Subsequent to residency, they complete a Facial Plastic Surgery fellowship which is dedicated exclusively to the face.
